Emily Stinehart: Passing on the Tradition of Helping Others

Emily Stinehart became active in community service after her family was assisted during challenging times. She volunteered at countless events, including local coat checks, recycling drives, bake sales and library programs, while still in high school. As a University of Toledo student, Emily volunteers and provides leadership within the Circle K organization, a student based group that fosters volunteerism in tandem with a local Kiwanis Club. Currently serving as district secretary, Emily is running for lieutenant governor in the northwest Ohio district. Through her service with Circle K, Emily has interacted with the following organizations: the Josina Lott Center, Toledo Head Start Program, Cherry Street Mission and Six Cent Initiative.

St. Francis de Sales High School: Jefferson Awards’ Student Leaders Making a Difference in Toledo

Through Leadership Toledo, the Youth Service Initiative was launched mid-year in four schools in the Toledo region. Samuel Evola took the reigns, leading the program to be the first school to recognize a student with the Jefferson Award. Samuel is involved in many school activities, sports and has volunteered countless hours. Jonathan Niese was the first award recipient from St. Francis de Sales and was chosen because of his more than 300 hours of community service. Some of his volunteer activities are service projects in Appalachia and volunteering as a spotter for “Lose the Training Wheels,” a program that teaches disabled children how to ride bicycles.

Kevin Brown: A Custodian Answers Calling to Help Underprivileged Kids

Seven years ago, when Kevin Brown came across a group of bored children causing trouble in their neighborhood, he knew he had to do something. He developed an after-school program for more than 100 children and a summer program for more than 400 children. Affectionately known as Coach Brown, he was determined to provide a safe place for these children to play and excellent educational and cultural opportunities for kids. Many of these children have hard lives and would have no adult supervision after school. During the school year, the kids get tutoring, and many of their teachers say they have seen improvement in their grades. During the summer, the kids have access to art and dance classes, gym, and voluntary bible study.

Dick Bere: A Retired Kroger’s President Finds Free Supplies for Teachers

Dick Bere retired as the President and Chief Operating Officer of The Kroger Co in 1997. For twelve years,he served as the full-time volunteer Chief Operating Officer for Crayons to Computers. Crayons to Computers (C2C), is an innovative, non-profit free store for school teachers. He spends more than 50 volunteer hours per week at the warehouse, serving every capacity. Since its beginning in 1997, C2C has distributed over $60 million worth of school supplies to 95,000 children in the Greater Cincinnati area. Mr. Beres leadership, budget and inventory management skills, and retail expertise have been invaluable. Dicks leadership for the national Kids in Need Foundation has also resulted in the opening and networking of 32 additional teacher free stores around the country.
